Pathfinder and Ordnance Survey

Pathfinder Guides, through Crimson Publishing, is an Ordnance Survey licensed partner. The clear, large-scale route maps used in the books to illustrate each Pathfinder Walk and Short Walk are one of the core features in the guides. Since the first Pathfinder Guides were published in 1989, the OS 1:25,000-scale Explorer and Outdoor Leisure map extracts have been central to the publishing ethos behind the books. The holy trinity of fabulous walks, written by professional outdoor writers and drawn on large-scale OS map extracts continues to set the benchmark for successful walking guides.

While the OS 1:25,000 sheet maps are used by an enormous variety of outdoor enthusiasts, for many years the vast majority of users have been walkers. The large-scale depiction of 1mm on the map representing 25 metres on the ground is particularly good for walking, achieving a good practical compromise between sheet size and coverage on the one hand and showing clear topographical detail on the other. Public paths, permitted paths, bridleways, byways, national trails and recognised long-distance paths, tracks and lanes, and access land are all features used to create Pathfinder Walks and shown in conjunction with contours, rivers, woodland and field boundaries, settlements and cultural and historic features, renders an extraordinarily useful image of the landscape and setting for our routes.

In the books, due to constraints of layout space, it is not always possible to show the mapping at 1:25,000 but we always include a scale bar with each route map and a scale statement.

We list the relevant OS Explorer/OL sheet number and the 1:50,000-scale Landranger sheet number in the information panel for each walk in every guide. Many readers go walking with the appropriate OS map in addition to our guide. We endorse and encourage this, and the simple fact of being able to see our highlighted route in the context of an OS Explorer sheet is often commented upon by readers. This can give context to the geographical proximity of adjacent walks as well as providing the reader with a wider view at walking map scale for further exploration in the vicinity of our walk.

Inclusion of National Grid numbers (the blue eastings and northings) is bespoke for each walk map extract. This enables the waypoints listed in the information panel on the opening page of each walk to be pinpointed on the map, and allows the reader to enter these co-ordinates – plus intermediate co-ordinates of their own if desired – into their GPS receivers.

The inside front cover of each guide carries an OS map legend for convenient and easy reference to the symbols used on the route maps. The much smaller scale key map, showing the walk locations in the introduction to each book, and the ‘area covered by this guide’ map shown on the back cover, are created using OS Open Data.

If you are new to country walking and/or new to map reading, you will find our introduction to map reading and basic navigation, Pathfinder Guide Map Reading Skills, an easy-to-use and very informative read.
